Cut and paste question for gimp?

I'm trying to paste a color picture into a black and white picture in the program Gimp but every time I paste the fuc*ing pasted object keeps coming up in black and white just like the background image! I want it to be in color! I've looked all over the stupid program for an option that would allow me to paste it in color. Can it be done or does this program just suck?
